When Mark Salzberg viewed the coins of the Binion Collection, he also viewed the coins of the Nevada
Silver Collection. This collection of high-grade United States
Liberty Walking silver half-dollars is surrounded by mystery, even
more so perhaps than the coins of the Binion
Collection or the Wells
Fargo Nevada Gold hoard. Their story, their owner, and even the location of the sale of these coins
all remain unknown.
Silver half-dollars were first authorized by Congress in 1792 and
mintage began in December 1794. Over the next 122 years, several
different types of half-dollars (and several varieties of each) were
minted in the United States: Flowing Hair, Draped Bust, Capped Bust,
Liberty Seated, and Barber (Liberty Head).
In 1916, the United States introduced the Liberty Walking silver
half-dollar. This coin was designed by A. A. Weinman whose
monogram appears under the tip of the eagle's wing feathers on the
reverse of the coin. These half-dollars were minted in
Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco.
Liberty Walking half-dollars are composed of 90% silver and 10%
copper. Weighing 12.5 grams and having a diameter of 30.6
millimeters, each one contains 0.36169 ounces of pure silver.
